MIDWAY ISD
MIDWAY RIVER VALLEY ADDITION
As part of the 2019 bond program, an 87,859 SF addition will occur at River Valley Intermediate School to convert it to a middle school, expanding the capacity of the campus to approximately 1,300 students. The addition will include a new two-story academic wing for eighth grade students and a single-story addition for athletics, Ag science, and a cafeteria expansion. The academic addition will be located at the front of the building, extending toward Speegleville Road. The existing Life Skills classroom will be renovated and reconfigured to allow for a new corridor to be cut through to connect the addition to the main building.
The addition will include more special education classrooms, an art classroom, two CTE classrooms, general education classrooms, and science labs. There will be multiple collaboration areas with writable surfaces, technology, and flexible furniture to allow classroom instruction and projects to extend beyond the classroom walls. These spaces are integrated into the classroom “neighborhoods”, which will result in supervision from multiple classrooms. The athletics addition will be on the northwest corner of the building where a parking lot and current bus drop-off exist. It will include two new gymnasiums: one competition gym that seats 1,000 and a practice gym that seats 400.
There will also be new locker rooms for each grade level with shared restrooms, coaches’ offices, athletics storage, a weight room, a training room, and concessions. Integrated between the athletics addition and the cafeteria will be a cafeteria expansion, two Ag Science classrooms, and an Ag shop. There will also be significant areas of interior renovation to convert this campus into a middle school. One of the existing gyms will become the band and choir halls and their associated support spaces. The current band hall will be used by orchestra, and the current choir room will be updated to become a black box theater.
These changes will greatly increase the fine arts area on the campus to be comparable to the existing Midway Middle School. In the academic wing, first floor science labs will increase in size to meet middle school requirements for seventh grade, and two CTE classrooms will be added. In the areas outside of each four-classroom “neighborhoods”, lockers will be removed to create collaboration areas on both levels for sixth and seventh grade. Windows will be added where possible between classrooms and collaboration spaces for connection and oversight. To accommodate the increased student population and their needs, modifications are also planned for the administration area, library, cafeteria, and kitchen. Part of the campus transitions to a middle school will also include adding four tennis courts, a four-lane track with practice field and field events on the north side of the site.
MIDWAY MIDDLE SCHOOL
As part of the 2019 bond program, a 114,784 SF renovation will occur at Midway Middle School to convert it from a 7th and 8th grade center to a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade center, with a campus capacity of approximately 1,320 students. The renovation areas will include the Classrooms, Labs, Commons, Main Corridors, Administration, and adjacent Restroom facilities. There will be multiple collaboration areas with writable surfaces, technology, and flexible furniture to allow classroom instruction and projects to extend beyond the classroom walls.
These spaces are integrated into the classroom neighborhoods, which will result in supervision from multiple classrooms. The renovation will include rework of the entry drive of the building where a parking lot and current bus drop-off exists. It will include parking reconfiguration on the North side of the building as well as outdoor seating areas at the existing South area.
MIDWAY CTE ADDITION
As part of the 2019 bond program, a 57,087 SF Career and Technical Education (CTE) addition will occur at Midway High School, expanding the capacity of the high school by more than 400 students. After studying multiple options and collaborating with administration and staff, a two-story addition at the front of the high school has been developed with all STEM programs (Engineering, Computer Science, Health Science, and Biomed) located on the first floor and Visual Arts (Fashion Design, Graphic Design, and Photography) on the second floor.
The CTE addition will feature learning on display by having transparency into key spaces such as Robotics, the Hospital Lab, and Fashion Design. All other classrooms will have some visibility from the corridor but will be limited. There will be multiple collaboration areas with writable surfaces, technology, and flexible furniture to allow classroom instruction and projects to extend beyond the classroom walls. These spaces are integrated into the classroom pods, which will result in great supervision from multiple classrooms. Outdoor learning spaces are also being developed, including a courtyard outside of Robotics and a body farm outside of Biomed.
There will be multiple two-story volumes with open balconies around stairs to create a connection between floor levels for all CTE programs. The Robotics lab will also be two stories and will visually link both floors.
MIDWAY DATA CENTER
This is a 32,000 SF renovation of an original Food Lion Grocery Store that was renovated into a call center. The building will be completely gutted, reroofed, and receive a new façade on all four sides of the building. This will be the home of the New Information Technology Center (ITC) for Midway ISD. There will be new office space for the technology staff and will house the main data center hub for all of Midway ISD’s campuses. The technology side of the building will also have warehouse space with loading docks for receiving and storing computer, ipads, and other technology items. The building will also house a large training room that can be divided into 3 separate rooms with operable partitions for all of Midway Staff to use for various types of training. It will also have classroom and office space for Midway’s education recovery program as well as a full functioning kitchen.
